Bibliometric Evaluation of Publications from the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Research Programme: Evidence of Expanding Contributions to Health Research and Science
At #SCECSAL2026, Teddie Chima of the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome (MLW) Research Programme delivered an insightful presentation on behalf of colleagues Jay Bennett, Evaristar Kudowa, Alfred Muyaya, Cecellia Shammim Saidi, Prof. Stephen Gordon, and Prof. Henry Mwandumba. The study focused on a bibliometric assessment of MLW’s research publications.
The analysis responds to the limited documentation of African research productivity while also strengthening MLW’s case for continued funding by showcasing notable growth and international competitiveness. Findings reveal that MLW has produced 1,903 publications, with a steady and significant increase in annual output over time. The programme achieved a Field-Weighted Citation Impact of 1.7, indicating that its research is cited well above the global average.
Furthermore, 19% of its publications are ranked among the top 10% most cited worldwide, placing it on par with leading UK institutions. The study also emphasizes the critical role of international collaborations in amplifying research impact.
In conclusion, the presentation demonstrates that African research institutions are capable of competing on a global stage. It recommends enhancing publication strategies, incorporating bibliometric monitoring into institutional planning, and strengthening collaborative networks. However, it also notes certain limitations, including database coverage constraints and the need to better capture broader societal impact.
