Students at Chayamba Secondary School in Kasungu District are reported to have set fire to a classroom, the deputy head teacher’s office, a storage room, the library, and smashed windows in other classrooms. The Association understands the incident occurred last night, and by this morning many students were seen leaving the school with their belongings.
According to some students, the destruction was allegedly led by a group of Form Four learners who feared expulsion after facing disciplinary action for bullying Form One students. After a meeting on the school grounds, they reportedly encouraged others to join in vandalizing school property.
School authorities have not yet commented. However, the Malawi Library Association has expressed deep disappointment over the destruction of the library, highlighting the loss as a setback to education. Central East Education Division Manager, Dickens Mbewa, has also warned students against such behavior, noting the incident follows a similar case recently reported at Chulu CDSS.
